On Sunday evening May 7th, French people discovered the name of the 25th President of the country. Emmanuel Macron has been elected with 66,1% against 33,9% for Marine Le Pen. This election was the occasion of a strong national debate, due to the lot of differences between the two candidates.
The question of the European Union has been a lot debated, Marine Le Pen was for a referendum on this issue to allow a Frexit if the reforms she wanted to develop were not accept by Bruxelles. She has been seen as a nationalist fighting against the too prominent place taken by Bruxelles since decades. Emmanuel Macron disagrees with Marine Le Pen’s argumentation and develops the idea of a strong France in a new Europe. He said that the current EU was not efficient for France and for all the European nations, he insists on the fact that strong reforms should be done. He wants to put France in the forefront of the EU.
The symbol chosen by Emmanuel Macron this Sunday evening was really strong. He decided to arrive before the Pyramid of Louvre on the European anthem. The question is now to see if Emmanuel Macron will act for a more federalist union or for a stronger France in a more successful European Union.
The current challenge for the youngest French President is to win the legislatives elections in one month, otherwise he will have to form a coalition. His political movement will study the situation for the 577 constituencies, seeing if they appoint political leaders from left (Parti Socialiste) or right (Les Républicains) such as Christian Estrosi (right political leader) or Manuel Valls (Francois Hollande’s former Prime Minister) or their own candidates.
The name of the next Prime Minister of Emmanuel Macron is also a lot debated however the President told he has already chosen, bets are on!
